Entering Grades in the Gradebook
Overview
In AstraGrade, grades are recorded as ratings — selections from your course’s rating scale that represent each student’s level of mastery on a specific standard. You can enter ratings two ways: from the assessment detail page, or directly in the Gradebook.
Prerequisites
You must have at least one assessment created and at least one student enrolled. See Creating an Assessment and Adding Students to a Course.
Entering ratings from an assessment
This is the most direct path when you’ve just finished an assessment and want to record scores.
- Open the course.
- Click the Assessments tab.
- Click the assessment you want to score.
- Scroll to the Student Ratings section. Each row is a student; each column is a linked standard.
- Click a cell to open the rating dropdown.
- Select a rating from your scale. The cell updates immediately and the student’s computed mastery for that standard recalculates.
- Repeat for each student and standard combination.
To clear a rating you’ve already entered, click the cell and select Not Assessed.
Entering ratings from the Gradebook
The Gradebook lets you enter ratings for a specific assessment without leaving the main gradebook view.
- Open the course.
- Click the Gradebook tab.
- Find the standard you want to score. Click the expand chevron (›) next to its code. The column expands to show a sub-column for each assessment linked to that standard.
- Click the assessment name in the sub-header. A side panel opens showing all students and their ratings for that assessment.
- Click any cell to open the rating dropdown and select a rating.
- To set every student to the same rating at once, click Apply to All at the bottom of the panel and choose a rating.
When a cell is focused in the gradebook, you can use keyboard shortcuts: press a number key (1, 2, 3…) to select the corresponding rating from your scale ordered lowest to highest, or press Delete or Backspace to clear a rating.
Ratings save automatically the moment you select them — there is no separate Save button. Each saved rating immediately updates the student’s computed mastery score for the linked standard.
